All Ireland Quarter Final Preview – Kerry v Armagh

TG4 All Ireland Ladies Quarter Final.

Kerry v Armagh Saturday 12th August at 6.30 Nowlan Park Kilkenny

When Armagh travelled to Duagh last March to take on Kerry in a National Football League Division One encounter, the Kerry girls gave a defensive masterclass to hold the highly rated Ulster kingpins to just 9 points, and emerge as 2 point victors.

The newly crowned Munster champions will be hoping for something similar next Saturday when they once again lock horns with the Orchard county in the TG4 All Ireland senior quarter final at 6.30 in a venue to be confrmed.

Although they bowed out of the Ulster championship with a 1-14 to 1-10 loss to Donegal in June, this Armagh team have the players that are capable of causing Kerry a lot of problems. One of their most dangerous attackers is Aimee Mackin, an elusive forward with a lethal left leg ,whilst Caroline O’Hanlon at midfield has been regarded as one of the top players in the country over the last few seasons. Kerry managed to keep tabs on these two danger women in Duagh last March, with Lorraine Scanlon having a towering game on O’Hanlon, and the Kerry defence getting the numbers back to smother the best efforts of Mackin. Whilst these two are the marquee names on the Armagh team , they will have back up in the likes of Blaithinn Mackin, Niamh Marley, Clodagh McCambridge and Sinead Finnegan, all quality players in their own right. The Orchard county defeated Westmeath by 2 points in the last round of the qualifiers, and after racking up an impressive 3-16 on the scoreboard, their attack will have to be well marshalled once again if Kerry are to emerge victorious.

Kerry are on a high since their recent 1-14 to 3-6 Munster final victory over Waterford and can report a clean bill of health going into next Saturday’s encounter. Although it is 5 weeks since they won the title, manager Graham Shine has not left rustiness creep in, and the Kerry girls have played a number of challenge matches in the intervening period. Their most recent game was against Galway, and although they were without Sarah Houlihan and Louise Ni Mhuircheartaigh, the Kerry girls aquitted themselves quite well despite going down by a 2 point margin.

Kerry will have to plan without centre half forward Amanda Brosnan for the Armagh game however, and manager Shine admits that her loss will be hard felt. ” Amanda is going on a tour of South East Asia over the next few weeks and she is going to be a massive loss to us”, he said. ” She has been in great form and her work rate and honesty will be badly missed. Still though, I suppose it will give an opportunity to whoever replaces her to come in and stake a claim on the team”.

Shine has also been well pleased with how some of his players have put their hands up for selection with their performances at training over the last few weeks. “Some girls have really impressed and are definitely in our plans. The competition at training is fierce and I think that we could pick from 20 players that could do a job for us on the day. That competition is healthy, and I think that we are in a good place going into the game. Armagh will be tough, there’s no doubt, but hopefully we will spark and have enough to come through in the finish”.

If Kerry are to win they will need to take their chances when they present themselves. Armagh had a heavy emphasis on defence when the sides last met, and Kerry will have to counter this by moving the ball quickly in transition to stop the northern side from setting up their blanket once again. There is pace in this Kerry side to be able to do that . Houlihan , Ni Mhuircheartaigh, Laura Rogers and Anna Galvin have legs to burn and need to run at their opponents at every opportunity. The tussle between Scanlon and O’Hanlon will also be vital. If Scanlon can do a job on the Armagh girl, then Kerry will be half way towards victory. Kerry are likely to pick from either Caroline Kelly, Aislinn Desmond or Aisling Leonard to pick up Mackin. Any of those 3 are capable of curbing the Armagh star, but they will need support from their colleagues to do so.

Kerry will have the confidence to win on Saturday. They have the experience of playing in big games, and the know how to claw out the results when needed. As well as that, the emergence of new young players like Hannah O’Donoghue, Sarah Leahy, and Sarah Murphy has given the team some freshness and vitality. Armagh will bring typical Ulster toughness and resilience to the play, but Kerry are well capable of mixing it in the physical stakes when needed. The carrot of an All Ireland semi final against either Waterford or Dublin on the 26th August is what both teams have to play for, and I feel that Kerry have the quality to do the job and emerge victorious by by 2 or3 points.

Kerry Captain Rachel Dwyer Is A Chip Off The Old Block !

20 years ago in 1997 Denis Dwyer of Waterville played at wing forward on the Kerry senior team that defeated Cavan in the All Ireland semi final in Croke Park.Denis Dwyer 2

Denis was one of the new kids on the block as Kerry manager Paidi O Se strove to build a side capable of ending Kerry’s 11 year wait for an All Ireland title.

Dwyer had been a precocious talent at underage level, and having won an All Ireland minor medal in 1994, he played at U21 level for Kerry for 3 years – 1995- 1997, captaining the Kingdom to All Ireland glory in 1995 and also winning an U21 All Ireland in 1996.

After being drafted into the Kerry senior team in 1997, Denis would become a vital cog on a Kerry machine that would ultimately go all the way to glory as Kerry defeated Mayo in the All Ireland final that September. Kerry also won the NFL title that year where Denis scored a vital goal in their victory over Cork.

Denis played with the Kerry senior team for 9 years and is the proud holder of 2 All Ireland senior championship medals.

What is significant about the All Ireland semi final against Cavan  is that now 20 years later, his daughter Rachel will captain the Kerry U14’s in an All Ireland semi final – and co incidentally it is also against Cavan!

Rachel’s mom is Michelle Fitzgerald – sister of Maurice – another link to the 1997 Kerry senior team! Of course her aunt is Marie Fitzgerald -an All Ireland senior medalist with Kerry in 1993 – so the breeding is good as they might say!

Rachel is very much in the mould of her father – a fast, hard working, skilful and athletic player- hopefully she can guide her team to victory in next Sunday’s All Ireland semi final.

The game will take place in Banagher and will throw in at 2pm.

Kerry Senior Ladies Name Their Team For Mayo Clash.

The Kerry ladies team to take on Mayo in the Round 7 of the Lidl ladies National Football League Division 1 shows one change to the side that defeated Armagh in the last round with Emma Sherwood of the Firies club starting at midfield at the expense of Aisling O’Connell who is still recovering from injury. There are a number of positional changes on the team with Aislinn Desmond moving to full back while Caroline Kelly will take up the centre half back position. Meanwhile Amanda Brosnan will move to the half forward line from midfield.

Mayo come into the game on the back of a 1 point victory over Dublin in the last round. They are currently on 6 points and need a win to avoid relegation to Division 2. Kerry are on 9 points and a victory over Mayo could propel them into a top 4 semi final position depending on how other results in the league .

Kerry v Mayo throws in at 2pm on Sunday in Swinford Amenity Park.

No Joy For The Kerry Senior Ladies In Galway.

Lidl Ladies National Football League Round 5

Kerry 1-10 Galway 3-6

Two goals conceded in the 39th and 40th minute of the second half of this Lidl National Football League Round 5 game  effectively put paid to Kerry’s chances of winning the encounter. Kerry were leading by 4 points prior to this, having garnered 1-3 without reply at the start of the second period, but the 2 goal concession was a mortal blow that Kerry just could not recover from, despite a gallant effort to claw it back.Kerry v Galway Eilish L

The Corofin pitch was barely playable as the heavy rain over the previous few days meant that the ground conditions were treacherous. Unforced errors were the order of the day as players struggled to keep their feet. Indeed it was a credit to the fitness levels of both teams that they kept the intensity right up to the finish.Kerry v Galway Emma Sherwood

Kerry were the first to settle and they struck 3 points on the bounce in the first five minutes from Louise Ni Mhuircheartaigh, Megan O’Connell and Sarah Houlihan. Galway’s reply was instant and the dangerous Roisin Leonard replied with a point and a decent soccer style goal when she finished a breaking ball with a low shot past Linda Bruggener in the Kerry goal. Kerry were turning over the ball too easily and Catriona Cormican pointed after a Kerry defensive error. Ni Mhuircheartaigh kept the scoreboard kicking over with a pointed free but Cormican replied with her second point of the contest and this was followed by another from Lucy Hannon to push Galway into a 1-4 to 0-4 lead with 25 minutes gone in the first half. Wasteful Kerry shooting saw them kick two bad wides in a row before Amanda Brosnan struck for a good point right on the half time whistle to leave Kerry just 2 points behind at the break, 1-4 to 0-5.Kerry v Galway Ciara Murphy

Much like the first half Kerry started the second in whirlwind fashion and Anna Galvin and Ni Mhuircheartaigh popped over early points. The excellent Ni Mhuircheartaigh then struck for a superb goal when she rose above the Galway defence to fist the ball past goalkeeper Gowan, with the netminder caught in no man’s land. Brosnan added her second point straight afterwards and Kerry looked in cruise control as they pushed 4 points ahead. Galway had different ideas and struck for two goals in a row, the first coming from Roisin Leonard and the second coming seconds later when Ailbhe Davoren struck after Kerry failed to gain possession from their kick out. Galway substitute Barbara Hannon added another point to push them 3 ahead but Ni Mhuircheartaigh pointed a free for Kerry to keep them to within 2 points of the Tribeswomen. Disaster struck for Kerry as influential half forward Denise Hallissey was shown yellow, and the sin bin, for an over robust challenge on a Galway player. This meant that Kerry were forced to play most of the remainder of the contest with 14 players, and with the heavy underground conditions sapping the energy levels of the players, it was a very tough ask for the Kerry girls.

Ni Mhuircheartaigh did point another free for Kerry but with Galway packing the defence and an extra player on the field , the game petered out to it’s inevitable conclusion with Galway finishing as two point victors 3-6 to 1-10/

Next up for Kerry is a home tie against Armagh on 26th March  with the venue tbc. Armagh are level on 6 points with Kerry so a win for either side is vital.
