The Rose Hotel Division 5 Plate Final

Duagh 4-6 Churchill 1-6

Duagh and Churchill served up a feast of attacking football in the Rose Hotel Div 5 Plate final at sun soaked Castleisland last Wednesday night. Duagh came into the game as underdogs as they were down key players through injury and illness, but on the night they still had the superior firepower to take the title from a spirited Churchill side.

Star of the show for Duagh was centre half forward Saoirse Dillon who contributed 2-6 to the scoreline in an electric display. She had able backup from the likes of Leyra Moriarty in goals, Amie Woods  at  full back Lily Daly, Amie Sheehy, Teghan Welch, Margaret Dore,Aoibhínn Harte, Hayley McElligott,Anna Flynn, Eimear Buckley and Noelle Dillon in what was a marvellous team effort.

Churchill started brightly and enjoyed the lion’s share of the possession but failed to convert many of their opportunities from play. Their pressure eventually paid off when Meah Carmody struck for goal midway through the first half. Just before the half time whistle Duagh’s Saoirse Dillon kicked a long ball to Aoibhínn Harte who struck a good goal to give her side a 1-3 to 0-5 lead at the break.

Saoirse Dillon got Duagh off to a great start in the second half with a cracking goal,.A few minutes later  Dillon struck again for her second goal. Duagh’s midfield pairing of Nuala Moloney, and Anghradh Cudlipp were working well, although Churchill midfielder Jessica McGibney was showing stout resistance for her side..Lily Parker at centre half forward was also motoring well for Churchill but Duagh struck for their 4 th goal of the game when corner back Marie Sheehy, who was now operating at corner forward, struck the back of the net. This was the killer goal for Churchill although to their credit they kept trying to the finish.

The Duagh management team of Liz Twomey, Nora Mary Lane, Emily Woods and Bébhinn Neilson Quirke, gave all of their subs some game time as they celebrated victory on a 4-6 to 1-6 scoreline.
