Rhyno Quality Feeds Senior County League Roundup.
Division 1
Castleisland Desmonds 1-17 Na Gaeil 4-7
If Sky Sports were looking for a flagship game to promote the Rhyno Quality Feeds Senior County League then this thriller in Castleisland would certainly have been the one to go for.
Desmonds emerged victorious by one point, but really the contest could have gone either way with the action swinging from one end to another throughout the game.
There was some serious quality on display by both sides with Desmonds boasting the likes of senior county stars Lorraine Scanlon, Aisling Leonard, Andrea Murphy, Eilish Lynch and Jane Lynch while Na Gaeil were able to call upon Deirdre Kearney, Eilish O’Connor, Maria Quirke, Ayesha Roche and Sarah Cunningham.
After a superb first half, Na Gaeil went in leading by one point on a scoreline of 4-1 to 1-9. Na Gaeil’s ability to score goals was causing the Desmonds defence numerous problems with Maria Quirke (2, 1 pen) ,Erika O’Sullivan, and Jadyn Lucey goaling for the Tralee side and Rachael Cronin raising the green flag for the Castleisland girls. It could have been worse for Desmonds, but goalkeeper Caitlinn Nolan made 2 good saves to keep her side in the game.
Desmonds tightened up their defence in the second half and Na Gaeil were finding it more difficult to penetrate the Desmonds defence. Lorraine Scanlon was ruling the roost at midfield and supplying decent ball into the dangerous Leanne Mangan and Andrea Murphy. With time running out and the sides level, Lorraine Scanlon was fouled 21 metres from goal. Desmonds captain Rachael Cronin stepped up and struck the free kick with her trusty left leg straight over the bar to seal a one point win for the Castleisland team.
Na Gaeil had very impressive performers in flying wingers Megan Sheehy and Jadyn Lucey, Marie Quirke, Eilish O’Connor, Sarah Quigley and Sarah Cunningham, while Desmonds best were goalkeeper Caitlinn Nolan, Aisling Leonard , Lorraine Scanlon, Eilish Lynch, Rachael Cronin, Leanne Mangan, Andrea Murphy, and the evergreen Sandra Hartnett.
