LGFA and TG4 announce live coverage of 13 fixtures from 2024 Lidl National Leagues

THE Ladies Gaelic Football Association and Championship sponsors, TG4, are delighted to confirm a bumper schedule of Spring 2024 fixtures – including at least one game from each round of the 2024 Lidl National League.

13 live fixtures are pencilled in for a mixture of linear and Spórt TG4 coverage, including all four 2024 Lidl National League Finals.

The action gets underway with the glamour clash of Dublin and Kerry on Saturday January 20 at Parnell Park (5.15pm).

This game is a clash of the champions between Dublin, the 2023 TG4 All-Ireland Senior Championship winners, and Kerry, the reigning Lidl National League Division 1 holders.

It’s also a repeat of the 2023 TG4 All-Ireland Senior Final between the counties, won by Dublin at Croke Park on August 13.

That mouth-watering opening game is followed a week later on Saturday January 27 by the meeting of Connacht rivals Galway and Mayo, which will have a 3.15pm start at Duggan Park, Ballinasloe.

The action continues on Monday February 5 with another provincial derby, as Munster heavyweights Kerry and Cork meet at Austin Stack Park, Tralee, with a 3pm start.

The live fixture on Saturday February 17 in Round 4 will be confirmed in due course, along with two Spórt TG4 YouTube streams from Division 1 on Saturday/Sunday March 2/3.

Two more top-flight clashes will receive the live TG4 treatment on Monday March 18, with those games getting underway at 2pm and 4pm.

Another live TV fixture has been scheduled for Saturday March 24 at 2.45pm, in Round 7, as the group stages reach a conclusion.

The Divisions 3 and 4 Finals will be streamed live on the Spórt TG4 YouTube channel on Saturday April 6, followed by live TV coverage of the Divisions 1 and 2 Finals from Croke Park on Sunday April 7 (start times TBC).

Peil na mBan Beo will be available to audiences globally on the TG4 Player at www.tg4.ie/beo and on the TG4 Mobile and Smart TV App.

Former Galway star Máire Ní Bhraonáin will lead TG4’s Peil na mBan Beo coverage once again for the forthcoming season. The commentary team will be headed up by Brian Tyers.

They will be joined by expert panellists including ex-Waterford star and Underdogs selector, Michelle Ryan, Dublin’s All-Ireland winner, Sorcha Furlong, Donegal stars Emer Gallagher and Róisín Rodgers, as well as Cork’s multiple All-Ireland medallists, Rena Buckley and Rhóna Ní Bhuachalla.

TG4’s coverage will be produced by Waterford-based production company, Nemeton TV.

Rónán Ó Coisdealbha, TG4 Head of Sport, said: “TG4’s live television coverage of Ladies Football continues to grow each year and in 2023, TG4 broadcast more Ladies Football matches than ever before. 2024 will be an even bigger year again and we are looking forward to the Lidl National Leagues as counties battle it out to reach the Finals in April.”

Lidl Ireland Announces 26 Schools Confirmed for the #SeriousSupport Schools Programme 2024

Lidl Ireland Announces 26 Schools Confirmed for the #SeriousSupport Schools Programme 2024

Lidl’s Bespoke Programme sees an investment €120,000 to local schools

18th December 2023: Lidl Ireland are pleased to announce the 26 schools, one in every county in the Republic of Ireland, who have been chosen to participate in its #SeriousSupport Schools Programme for the 2023-24 school year. This represents an investment of €120,000 in local schools across the country.

Supported by the Ladies Gaelic Football Association (LGFA) and delivered by Youth Sport Trust and their specially trained athlete mentors, the programme is designed to educate teenage girls about the positive mental and physical health benefits of playing sport. The programme also aims to increase participation and reduce drop-out rates for teenagers in the sport. Twenty-six schools across Ireland will have the opportunity to benefit from the programme along with receiving a brand-new set of jerseys for their school team.

Lidl’s 2023 State of the Nation research commissioned in September demonstrated the significantly positive impact participation in sport has on secondary school girls. Girls that play sport are significantly more likely to have high levels of body confidence (40%) compared to girls who do not play sport (25%). 49% of girls that play sport report strong levels of mental wellbeing compared to just 29% of those that do not play sport. Among the benefits of playing sport cited by girls in the research was that it is good for your physical health (73%), increased mental wellbeing (49%), increased energy levels (49%), lifelong friendships (42%) and increased confidence (39%).

The athlete mentors of the Serious Support programme, all of whom are current or former inter county ladies Gaelic football players, are committed to using sport to transform the lives of young people. The mentors will introduce students to the programme’s values of Respect, Trust, Responsibility and Recognition. Taking place over the course of two visits to each school, the programme will be delivered via workshops and team-building sessions.

Boasting an impressive array of achievements, the stellar line up of LGFA intercounty players delivering this year’s programme are; Ann Marie Doran (Wicklow), Eilis Ward (Donegal), Laurie Ryan (Clare), Méabh de Búrca (Galway), Orlagh Farmer (Cork), Samantha Lambert (Tipperary), Therese Scott (Monaghan), Aisling Hanly (Roscommon), Anna Galvin (Kerry), Cathy Carey (Antrim), Deirdre O’Reilly (Cork), Leah Caffrey (Dublin), Lucy Hannon (Galway), Niamh McEvoy (Dublin), and Shannon McQuade (Fermanagh).

President of the LGFA, Mícheál Naughton, commented“Once again, we are in the privileged position to announce the schools participating in the 2024 Lidl #SeriousSupport schools programme, and the list of athlete mentors who will provide invaluable support and expertise. The athlete mentors are inter-county stars who are role models within their local communities and counties, and who can pass on invaluable insights to the students involved in the programme. We have had magnificent first hand feedback from previous programmes that students have received key skills to assist them in their daily lives, and at such a formative stage. I can’t think of better people to learn from than our athlete mentors, who have seen and done it all. I wish to acknowledge the brilliant work of Lidl Ireland in helping to bring this programme to life and to Youth Sport Trust, who will once again assist in its rollout.”

Eimear O’Sullivan, Corporate Affairs Director for Lidl Ireland and Northern Ireland said;

“The impetus of our longstanding Ladies Gaelic Football Association sponsorship has always been the impact we can have on the grassroots level of the game in communities across the country, and we’re delighted to be launching our Serious Support Schools Programme for another year.

The success of the programme is reflected in the growing number of schools and students taking part and we’ve been blown away by the feedback from students and the transformative impact that the programme has had on young people right across Ireland.

We’ve seen through our recent research the incredibly positive impact participation in sport has on young girls and through our team of fantastic sporting heroes and mentors, we aim to identify and unlock barriers faced by young people and support them on a programme to better physical and mental health.

I’m delighted to announce 26 schools selected to benefit from the programme this school year and I’d like to thank all of our loyal shoppers who took the time to nominate their school.”

Lidl Ireland has been the title sponsor of the Ladies Gaelic Football Association since 2016, recently announcing a four-year extension to the partnership that will ultimately mark a decade of #SeriousSupport. The extension will represent an investment of €10 million in 10 years of sponsorship by the retailer.

Kerry’s Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh claims 2023 TG4 Senior Players’ Player of the Year award

KERRY star Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh was named as the 2023 TG4 Senior Players’ Player of the Year at the annual TG4 All Star banquet, in association with Lidl, at The Bonnington Dublin Hotel on Saturday night.

The coveted individual accolade capped a memorable night for the 32-year-old Corca Dhuibhne player, who also collected a fourth TG4 All Star award, to add to her previous successes in 2012, 2013 and 2022.

Ní Mhuircheartaigh finished as leading scorer in the 2023 TG4 All-Ireland Senior Championship with a haul of 3-31, including 1-7 in the Final against Dublin on Sunday August 13.

For the Senior Players’ Player of the Year award, Ní Mhuircheartaigh held off stiff competition from Dublin duo Leah Caffrey and Jennifer Dunne to win the award which was voted on by fellow inter-county players.

The 2023 TG4 Intermediate Players’ Player of the Year award, meanwhile, went to Kildare forward Róisín Byrne.

From the Sarsfields club, Byrne scored 0-25 for the Lilywhites as they stormed to TG4 All-Ireland Intermediate glory, including seven points in a Final Player of the Match performance against Clare.

Byrne, who was also nominated for a TG4 All Star award, landed the Intermediate Players’ Player of the Year award ahead of Clare’s Fidelma Marrinan and Antrim’s Órlaith Prenter.

All three nominees were recently named on the 2023 TG4 Intermediate Team of the Championship, while Marrinan was also a TG4 All Star nominee.

And there was further glory for Down following their TG4 All-Ireland Junior Championship success as brilliant forward Natasha Ferris was named Junior Players’ Player of the Year.

Ferris, from the Bryansford club, finished her season as top scorer in the Junior grade with an astonishing tally of 7-31, including five points in the TG4 All-Ireland Final victory over Limerick.

Ferris was nominated for the Junior award alongside Limerick captain Róisín Ambrose and Fermanagh’s Bláithín Bogue, who was the 2022 recipient.

Earlier in the evening, Dublin and Thomas Davis legend Christina McGinty was officially inducted into the LGFA Hall of Fame.

McGinty was a 1989 All-Ireland Junior Championship winner with Dublin and also had the distinction of playing in All-Ireland Junior, Intermediate and Senior Club Finals during an outstanding career.

Kerry win 5 2023 TG4 All Stars

ALL-Ireland Senior champions Dublin lead the way with eight representatives on the 2023 TG4 Ladies Football All Star team.

Dublin’s haul eclipses their previous all-time best of seven players on the annual selection, which was achieved twice in 2018 and 2019.

The 2023 team was revealed on Saturday night at the annual TG4 All Star awards banquet, in association with Lidl, as the Bonnington Dublin Hotel.

Dublin’s eight winners are goalkeeper Abby Shiels, defenders Leah Caffrey, Lauren Magee and Martha Byrne, midfielder Jennifer Dunne, and forwards Orlagh Nolan, Hannah Tyrrell and Carla Rowe.

Tyrrell was named Player of the Match in the 2023 TG4 All-Ireland Senior Final, as Rowe had the honour of lifting the Brendan Martin Cup as team captain.

TG4 All-Ireland Finalists Kerry have been rewarded with five All Star award winners, namely defenders Eilís Lynch and Cáit Lynch, midfielder Lorraine Scanlon, and forwards Niamh Carmody and Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh.

Cork forward Ciara O’Sullivan and Mayo defender Danielle Caldwell have also received 2023 TG4 All Star awards.

The team is comprised of four first-time award winners, with Dublin’s Abby Shiels, Martha Byrne and Jennifer Dunne joined by Kerry’s Eilís Lynch as inaugural recipients.

Six players picked up their second awards on the night – Mayo’s Danielle Caldwell, Dublin’s Lauren Magee, Orlagh Nolan and Hannah Tyrrell, and Kerry’s Lorraine Scanlon and Niamh Carmody.

Kerry’s Cáit Lynch is now a three-time TG4 All-Star award winner, while the Kingdom’s ace forward Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh and Dublin’s Carla Rowe are both honoured for a fourth time.

Cork’s Ciara O’Sullivan is now a five-time winner, and she bridges a five-year gap after winning her fourth award in 2018.

There are four players who featured on the 2022 TG4 All Star team named on this year’s selection, as Mayo’s Danielle Caldwell and Kerry trio Cáit Lynch, Niamh Carmody and Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh receive the prestigious individual accolades once again.

The 2023 TG4 All Star team also contains three players from the Castleisland Desmonds club in Kerry – Eilís Lynch, Cáit Lynch and Lorraine Scanlon.

Two players from the Cuala club in Dublin are also honoured – Martha Byrne and Jennifer Dunne – while there are also two awards for the Na Fianna club in the capital, with Leah Caffrey and Hannah Tyrrell included in the annual 15.
