Donal O’Doherty Is The New Kerry Senior Ladies Manager.

The Kerry LGFA held their October County meeting on Tuesday night and the intercounty managements at all age groups were ratified.

The big news is that Donal O’Doherty of the Spa club Killarney will be the ne Kerry senior ladies manager.

O’Doherty played senior football for a number of years with the Spa club and also won an All Ireland vocational schools medal with Kerry in 1990 when they defeated Cavan in the final. Incidentally, the manager of that Kerry vocational team was Pat O’Shea , the current manager senior mens county champions of Dr Crokes.

Donal O’Doherty was the manager of the Killarney team that won the senior ladies county championship this year, and he was also in charge of the Spa ladies team that were successful in the Junior grade. He has extensive experience as a coach with Spa at all age levels and is the former manager of the Killarney Celtic senior men’s soccer team.

He is currently the Kerry LGFA Development officer but will now vacate this role to concentrate on his Kerry management duties. He has named Spa clubmate Tim O’Connor as a selector and Donal O’Sullivan of Killorglin will look after the strength and conditioning work. 2 further selectors will be named over the coming weeks.

Meanwhile Darragh Long of Austin Stacks and Declan Quill of Kerins O’Rahillys were ratified as joint Kerry minor ladies managers. Long is a former Kerry minor and u/21 star and is in the top 5 for championship appearances for his club. Long won a senior county championship medal when Austin Stacks defeated Mid Kerry in the 2014 County Championship final.

Declan Quill of Kerins O’Rahillys is the holder of 2 All Ireland senior medals with Kerry and also starred at minor and U21 level for his county. He played senior football for Kerry from 2001 to 2005 and in total made 14 championship appearances scoring 0-9. He was a regular starter for Kerry in their National League campaigns and amassed 4 goals and 99 points in his 34 games.

Former Kerry great Geraldine O’Shea of the Corca Dhuibhne and Ann Marie O’Donoghue of Beaufort will act as selectors on the team.

The U/16 management were also ratified and John Doona of Legion will make the step up from the U/14’s to manage the team. John will be joined by Nora O’Connor of Rathmore, Eamon Kissane of Beaufort, and Colin O’Leary of Rathmore as selectors with Gillian Healy Austin Stacks acting as administrator while Padraig O’Sullivan of Southern Gaels is the strength and conditioning coach.

The U/14 management will see Charlie McCarthy of Rathmore take the management reigns where he will be joined by Alan Foley of Beaufort and Hannah Devlin of Killarney Legion as selectors. There will be 2 further names added to the ticket over the next couple of weeks.

Kerry LGFA Annual Awards Night.

The Rose Hotel U12 Co League Div 1
A Stacks 4-4  Ballymac 0-9

Ballymac came to Connolly Park for the second time in a week and performed brilliantly in the first half to try to reverse the result from the North Kerry League.  Stacks responded with a goal to keep themselves in the game in the first half but in truth should have been behind at the half time whistle.  Both teams play to a very high standard and this was really shown in a second half filled with good football, good scores and great teamwork.

Unfortunately for Ballymac Stacks had the better performers in the forward line and they combined to score three goals in the second half which propelled them forward to the winning line while Ballymac had to be content with some great points from a very dominant midfielder.

Credit must go to both management teams for the way they are getting their teams to play, the emphasis is on teamwork and movement and for the second time in a week the crowd were treated to as pure a game of football as you would wish for.

It will be interesting how both these teams progress against the South Kerry teams and I am sure we will see each other again at the final stages of the league.

Munster Minor Ladies Final

Kerry v Cork Mallow May 7th @3.30 pm

There’s always something mystical about a Kerry and Cork clash at any level and the meeting of the sides in the Munster Minor final on Bank Holiday Monday May 7th could prove to be a classic.

Kerry came into the Munster championship as hot favourites, and rightly so, as the majority of the players were part of the double All Ireland winning U/16 teams of 2015 and 2016. They haven’t had things all of their own way however, and they will be up against it when they play a formidable Cork side in the final.

Kerry’s Munster campaign started on February 18th with a 3-13 to 3-5 victory over Tipperary in Firies. Hannah O’Donoghue was on fire that day scoring 3 goals and 6 points, as Kerry displayed some excellent team work to record an impressive win.

Kerry made the long journey to Skibbereen for the next round of the competition to face Cork on April 2nd. The rebellettes were too hot for Kerry on the day and secured an impressive 4-12 to 3-6 victory over the Kingdom. This defeat meant that Kerry would have to face Tipperary once again if they were to advance to the Munster final. Tipperary had learned a lot since their first meeting, and were full value for a 2-6 to 0-7 lead at half time. The Kerry players had to dig deep in the second half and they outscored their opponents by 2-6 to 0-5 to record a 2 point victory.

Cork’s path to the final was more straight forward and after their 9 point victory over Kerry, they recorded a 2-14 to 0-6 victory over Tipperary in Round 2. They are a formidable side and players like Ciara O’Shea, Sarah Leahy, Jenny Murphy, Ciara McCarthy, Emma Cleary, Katie Quirke and Fiona Keating are certain to test the Kerry girls resolve. They are managed by former Cork great John Cleary, and it is certain that he will have his side well drilled for the encounter.

Kerry will be equally as well prepared by Jonathan Griffin. With players of the calibre of Tara Breen, Kate Maher, Kayla O’Connor, Ciara Ryan, Ciara Murphy, Fiadhna Tangney Niamh O’Connor,Anna Clifford and Hannah O’Donoghue in their ranks they have the quality to defeat the Cork kingpins. A good start will be vital of course, as Cork can be very difficult to haul back if they establish a lead.

This Munster Final is a very difficult match to call. Cork will go in as favourites after their victory earlier in the campaign. Kerry will have learnt a lot from this defeat and if their forwards are on song they could come away with a narrow victory. It won’t be easy though and don’t be surprised if there is just a point or 2 between the sides at the finish.

The Kerry team to face Cork in the Munster Minor Championship final in Mallow is as follows;

1. SINEAD WARREN (RATHMORE)
2. MAIREAD LEHANE (MILLTOWN/LISTRY)
3. KAYLA O’CONNOR (CASTLEISLAND DESMONDS)
