Rhyno Quality Feeds County League Match Reports.

Many thanks to the clubs that supplied the Kerry ladies with match reports after last weekends first round of the Rhyno Quality Feeds County League .

Rhyno Quality Feeds Senior County League Roundup.

Division 1

Castleisland Desmonds 1-17 Na Gaeil 4-7

If Sky Sports were looking for a flagship game to promote the Rhyno Quality Feeds Senior County League then this thriller in Castleisland would certainly have been the one to go for.

Desmonds emerged victorious by one point, but really the contest could have gone either way with the action swinging from one end to another throughout the game.

There was some serious quality on display by both sides with Desmonds boasting the likes of senior county stars Lorraine Scanlon, Aisling Leonard, Andrea Murphy, Eilish Lynch and Jane Lynch while Na Gaeil were able to call upon Deirdre Kearney, Eilish O’Connor, Maria Quirke, Ayesha Roche and Sarah Cunningham.

After a superb first half, Na Gaeil went in leading by one point on a scoreline of 4-1 to 1-9. Na Gaeil’s ability to score goals was causing the Desmonds defence numerous problems with Maria Quirke (2, 1 pen) ,Erika O’Sullivan, and Jadyn Lucey goaling for the Tralee side and Rachael Cronin raising the green flag for the Castleisland girls. It could have been worse for Desmonds, but goalkeeper Caitlinn Nolan made 2 good saves to keep her side in the game.

Desmonds tightened up their defence in the second half and Na Gaeil were finding it more difficult to penetrate the Desmonds defence. Lorraine Scanlon was ruling the roost at midfield and supplying decent ball into the dangerous Leanne Mangan and Andrea Murphy. With time running out and the sides level, Lorraine Scanlon was fouled 21 metres from goal. Desmonds captain Rachael Cronin stepped up and struck the free kick with her trusty left leg straight over the bar to seal a one point win for the Castleisland team.

Na Gaeil had very impressive performers in flying wingers Megan Sheehy and Jadyn Lucey, Marie Quirke, Eilish O’Connor, Sarah Quigley and Sarah Cunningham, while Desmonds best were goalkeeper Caitlinn Nolan, Aisling Leonard , Lorraine Scanlon, Eilish Lynch, Rachael Cronin, Leanne Mangan, Andrea Murphy,  and the evergreen Sandra Hartnett.

Scorers Na Gaeil;  Sarah Cunningham 0-3, Maria Quirke 2-1 ,Erika O’Sullivan 1-0, Jadyn Lucey 1-0, Megan Sheehy 0-2, Eilish O’Connor 0-1

Scorers Desmonds; Leanne Mangan 0-6 (0-2 frees), Andrea Murphy 0-5, Lorraine Scanlon 0-3, Rachael Cronin 1-2 (0-1 free), Sandra Hartnett 0-1.

Inbhear Sceine Gaels 1-7 Southern Gaels 2-14

An inspired performance from Mary Cronin guided Southern Gaels to a 10 point victory over Inbhear Sceine Gaels in Sneem on Sunday.  Inbhear Sceine Gaels led by 1-7 to 1-4 at half time, however it was all Southern Gaels in the second half of the game. Cronin finished the game with 1-3 to her name while she was well assisted by Deirdre Corridan on 1-6, Anna Galvin on 0-4 and Lisa O’Sullivan with 0-1.

Corca Dhuibhne 4-8 Beaufort 4-13

Division 2

Rathmore 1-6 Scartaglin 1-12

Scartaglin created a bit of a surprise when they defeated Rathmore by 6 points in Rathmore on Sunday. Veteran Mags Fitzgerald was the difference between the teams as her 8 point haul inspired the Scart girls to victory. Rathmore, short 6 of their regular starting team, goaled through Catriona Desmond ,while the O’Mahony twins and Aoife Ryan were also on the scoresheet for them.

Laune Rangers 2-1 John Mitchels 6-14

John Mitchels were much too strong for a depleted Killorglin side in Cloon last Sunday. Mitchels totally dominated this game and led 3-5 to 1 goal at half time. Katelyn O’Sullivan, Cliodhna Hayes, and Leona O’Shea played well all through the game while Shauna Hanafin was superb at midfield.

Listowel Emmets 2-6 Finuge -St Senans 2-11

Finuge /St Senans were too strong for Listowel Emmets in the big local derby with Finuge/St Senans emerging victorious by 5 points. The half time score was Finuge /St Senans  1-05 to Listowel Emmets 0-02 Emmets did stage a good comeback in the second half and scored goals through Kate Sayers and Caoimhe O’ Sullivan but it wasn’t enough to gain the win.

Final Score Emmets 2-06 to Finuge /St. Senans 2-11.

Division 3

Austin Stacks 4-19 Clounmacon/Moyvane 3-4

Spa 5-9 Firies 2-9

Spa welcomed back some oldies but goodies to their team for their victory over Firies, however it was one of their younger players Roisin Kearney who stole the limelight with 3 goals in the game.

Spa led by 3-3 to 6 points at half time but Firies, inspired by Maura O’Connor, never stopped trying throughout the game.

Dr Crokes 3-18  Kilcummin 5-6

Kilcummin got off to a great start by opening the scoring with two quick goals through Eilish O’Leary.   Rheanna O’ Shea replied with a goal and a point for Dr Crokes.  Amanda Brosnan scored 1-5 for Crokes in the first half . Half Time : Dr Crokes 2-8 Kilcummin 2-3.
Christina Cooper and Siobhan Burns(0-4) had great games for Dr Crokes in the second half as the Killarney side had too much firepower for their Kilcummin neighbours. The Crokes backline of Megan Kiely, Edel O’ Carrol and Megan Brosnan where outstanding all through. For Kilcummin , Eilish O’Leary, Maggie Doherty and Emer Casey played best on the day.

Full Match Reports From Kerry U14’s And Minors.

Minors Finish Strongly Despite Defeat.

Munster Ladies Minor Football Championship.

Cork 4-16 Kerry 2-9.

A disastrous first half in which they conceded 3 goals and 14 points , proved to be the undoing for a plucky and never say die Kerry minor side in Farranfore last Saturday.

Cork had 1-3 on the scoreboard with just 3 minutes gone in the first half, but the Kerry girls then scored 4 points in a row through Eilish O’Leary (2),Leah Henry and Elizabeth Mohan (free),to leave the score Cork 1-3 Kerry 0-4 with 13 minutes on the clock.

Cork struck for a goal through Laura Cleary after a Kerry move broke down in the middle of the field.

This was followed by a raft of points and 2 further goals from full forward Grace Culloty, as Cork’s power and pace was completely overwhelming the Kerry challenge.

Kerry went into the half time break 19 points down, 3-14 to 0-4, with every Kerry supporter dreading the second half that was to come.

Kerry manager Connie O’Connor made a number of personal and positional switches at the break , and credit must be given for the change that they brought to the team.

Centre half back Sarah Murphy moved to the full back line and steadied the ship completely, while the introduction of Andrea Murphy added some spark and pace to the forward line.

Kerry drew first blood with a pointed free from Elizabeth Mohan , Cork immediately replied with a goal from Lorraine O’Neill in the 35th minute to leave the score Cork 4-14 Kerry 0-5.

Encouragingly, the Kingdom girls refused to wave the white flag, and came at Cork with everything they had. Andrea Murphy struck for her first goal in the 6th minute following a good pass from Emma Dineen. Murphy goaled again in the 16th minute after a good passing move involving Leah Henry and Eilish O’Leary. Kerry continued to press and added 3 more points through Leah Henry and Liz Mohan. Cork replied with 2 points of their own to leave the final score Cork 4-16 Kerry 2-9.

Kerry can take great encouragement from their second half display and will go with some confidence when they face Tipperary away in the next round on April 9th.

Kerry team and scorers : Deborah Mangan, Fiona Keating, Faye O Donoghue, Moira Flaherty, Laoibhse Coughlan, Sarah Murphy, Siobhan Burns. Norma O Mahony, Christine Cooper, Emma Dineen, Elizabeth Mohan, Katie O Mahony, Leah Henry, Eilish O Leary, Eilish Kavanagh.

Kerry u/14’s impressive as they defeat Cork.

Munster Ladies u/14 Football Championship.

Kerry 2-11 Cork 3-4.

Goals in each half by Mary O’Connell and Ella Teahan provided the platform for the Kerry to defeat Cork in the first round of the Munster Ladies u/14 Football Championship.

In truth Kerry were much the better team throughout the game and it took a last minute goal for Cork by Ciara Irwin to put a better gloss on the scoreline.

Kerry opened the scoring with a Siofra O’Shea point. This was immediately followed with a goal from Mary O’Connell in the 3rd minute when her dipping shot lobbed over the Cork goal keeper Eimear Sheehan. Further points from Danielle O’Leary and Siofra O’Shea put Kerry ahead 1-3 to no score lead. Cork struck for their own goal in the 13th minute when Clona Dooley cut in from the right side and hit the roof of the net. Cork proceeded to take control of the rest of the first half and Kerry goalkeeper Ciara Butler was called upon to make an amazing save following a quick counter attack by Cork . The rebels added points through Dooley and Nina Kelliher to push them into a one point lead, 1-4 to 1-3, approaching half time. Danielle O’Leary added a point for Kerry from a free, after she was fouled herself. Worryingly for Kerry, O’Leary’s point was their first score since the 7th minute of the half.  The half time score line read Kerry 1-4 Cork 1-4.

Cork struck for a goal in the 3rd minute of the second half through Aoife Twomey.  Kerry’s response was immediate and Ella Teahan struck for a goal and a point in the space of a minute. The stylish Danielle O’Leary added another score for Kerry after a good pass from Mary O’Connell to leave Kerry 2 points up 2-6 to 2-4 with 8 minutes gone in the second half.

Cork began to get a grip on proceedings and dominated the next 10 minutes of the game. Rachel O’Connor was outstanding at full back for the Kingdom, and the rebels couldn’t find any way through her staunch defence. 3 points in a row from Ella Teahan, and 2 good points from Rachel Dwyer , one a good solo effort, the other following a good pass from Siofra O’Shea, pushed Kerry into a 2-11 to 2-4 lead with 27 minutes gone. Cork then struck for their third goal when a free kick from Ciara Irwin went all the way to the Kerry net, thankfully it was too late and the Kingdom held out for a deserved 4 point victory.

As well as those already mentioned, Kerry had strong performances from Aoife Dillane , Ava Doherty, Maud Kelly and Rachel Kilgallen.

Kerry will now face Limerick away in the next round which is provisionally fixed for April 9th.

Kerry team and scorers:  Ciara Butler, Tara Murphy, Rachel O Connor, Aoife Dillane, Susan Cahill, Maud Kelly, Ava Doherty, Mary O Connell (1-0), Siofra O’Shea (0-2), Rachel Kilgallen, Ella Teahan (1-4), Fodhla Houlihan, Rachel Dwyer (0-2), Cliona Murphy, Danielle O Leary (0-3).

The teams went in level with 1-4 each at half time, although the Kerry girls looked the much more impressive outfit in the first half.

Kerry were dealt a body blow at the start of the second half when Aoife Twomey goaled for the rebels, however an impressive 1-7 without reply put the Kingdom firmly in control of the game.

Cork did score a goal again in the 30th minute to ensure a nervy finish to the game, Kerry had the hard work done though and ran out winners by 4 points.

Kerry were well served by the outstanding Rachel O’Connor at full back, she was well assisted by Aoife Dillane and Ava Doherty in defence , Siofra O’Shea and Mary O’Connell dominated midfield, while Ella Teahan , Rachel Kilgallen, Danielle O’Leary and Rachel Dwyer were impressive in the forwards.  Goalkeeper Ciara Butler was also solid all through, her point blank save in the first half was one of the highlights of the game.

IMG_0990IMG_0951The Kerry minor ladies suffered a 4-16 to 2-9 defeat to Cork in Farranfore, also on Saturday.

Cork blitzed the Kingdom in the first half ,with forwards Grace Culloty and Laura Cleary helping themselves to  2-5 and 1-4 respectively, to see reds leading by 3-14 to 0-4 at the break.

Kerry came out with renewed vigour in the second half and took the game to their opponents. Outstanding performances from Sarah Murphy, Emma Dineen, Eilish O’Leary, Elizabeth Mohan and 2 goal substitute Andrea Murphy enabled Kerry to outscore Cork by 2-5 to 1-2 in this period

It wasn’t enough to garner the win , and in the end Cork finished 13 points to the good.

The second half performance will give Kerry massive hope and encouragement for the rest of the campaign.

The second half wasn’t quite as high scoring, but Ava Looney found the net again to see Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra run out as winners on a scoreline of 7-6 to 3-8.

Ava Looney of Scoil Phobail was awarded the player of the match award.

At the final whistle there were scenes of great jubilation as ISK were crowned champions on a 6-8 to 3-12 scoreline.

Mayo Take Their Chances To Defeat The Kingdom.

IMG_9581 (1)IMG_9561 (1)

Lidl Ladies National Football League Division 1.

Kerry 2-6 Mayo 2-8

Kerry had no joy against unbeaten Mayo in Division 1 of the Lidl Ladies National Football League on Sunday in Fitzgerald Stadium, Killarney

Sarah Houlihan registered 2-3 for the Kingdom but it wasn’t enough as Mayo preserved their 100 per cent record.

Aileen Gilroy’s goals for Mayo in either half , proved crucial to the outcome as she raised her first green flag in the 23rd minute before striking again four minutes from time.

Gilroy’s opening effort put Mayo 1-3 to 0-3 clear but Kerry rallied to lead by 1-5 to 1-3 at half-time, as Houlihan collected the first of her brace three minutes before the interval.

Houlihan was on target again eight minutes into the second half as Kerry grabbed a firm stranglehold on the game but Mayo fought their way back and ultimately it was a run of 1-5 without reply that swung the game in favour of the Westerners.

After Houlihan’s second goal, Kerry didn’t score again until stoppage time through Anna Galvin, but by then it was unfortunately too late.

Kerry played some good football throughout but Mayo were just that bit sharper in front of goal.

Kerry’s next game is on April 3rd away to Monaghan and then on April 10th Kerry welcome Tyrone to the Kingdom.
