Is é TG4 príomhurraitheoirí Chraobhchomórtais na hÉireann i bPeil na mBan ón mbliain 2001 agus tá athrú tagtha ar an gcomhpháirtíocht sin go bhfuil sí ar an gceann is mó aitheantais agus is nuálaí anois i saol an spóirt.

Sa bhliain 2022, d’fhógair TG4 síneadh cúig bhliana lena gcuid urraíochta ar Chraobhacha Uile-Éireann Pheil na mBan Idir-Contae. Leanfaidh an socrú sin go ceann shéasúr na bliana 2027.

“Bhí de phribhléid agam i mbliana a bheith páirteach i roinnt de na bearta ceiliúrtha ar leibhéal na gcúigí ar Chothrom 50 Bliain Chumann Pheil na mBan agus a chloisteáil ó bhéal roinnt de na daoine a raibh páirt acu ann faoin gcaoi ar tugadh an Cumann chun cinn, an duine seo agus an duine siúd, sa pharóiste thall agus sa pharóiste abhus agus ó chontae go contae ar fud na tíre. Is léiriú iontach an rath atá ar Pheil na mBan sa lá atá inniu ann ar an toradh rífhiúntach atá ar an aisling a bhí ag oibrithe deonacha ó thús agus ar an dua a caitheadh le barr díograise agus dúthrachta le himeacht na mblianta. Is ceart a gcuid scéalta sin faoin gcur-ó-dhoras agus faoin mbeag-is-fiú a bhí le sárú ag Peil na mBan a chur os comhair an tsaoil mhóir agus beidh ról ag TG4 ina leith sin. Dá ainneoin sin, tháinig Cumann Pheil na mBan chun cinn go bhfuil ina eagras spóirt de scoth an domhain a bhfuil d’aisling aige cothroime agus comhchéim dáiríre a bhaint amach. Tréaslaím féin agus lucht TG4 ar fad a bhfuil bainte amach acu le gach duine a rinne fónamh maidir le sárleibhéal imeartha a chothú i bPeil na mBan agus leo siúd a rinne tairbhe maidir le gnóthaí riaracháin.

“Ba mhór an onóir dom féin go pearsanta oibriú le hocht mbliana den leithchéad leis an Uachtarán Marie Hickey, leis an Uachtarán Micheál Naughton agus le Helen O’Rourke, Príomhfheidhmeannach Chumann Pheil na mBan agus an fhoireann ar fad. Tá gairmiúlacht an eagrais ceangailte go dlúth le cumas ceannasaíochta Helen. Tá forbairt agus forás ar an dá eagraíocht mar gheall ar an gcomhpháirtíocht idir Cumann Pheil na mBan agus TG4 ón mbliain 2001 anall. An meas ar a chéile, an chomhghuaillíocht dhlúth agus ardaidhmeannacht i gcomhar na saintréithe a ghabhann leis an gcomhpháirtíocht sin.

“Beidh gach cluiche i gCraobh Uile-Éireann TG4 na Sinsear ar taispeáint beo ag TG4 i mbliana, ar an gcóras líneach teilifíse nó ar ardán ar líne. Seo an chéad uair ag TG4 tabhairt faoin uile chluiche sa chraobh a thaispeáint. Beidh ar a laghad 10 gcinn de chluichí breise á dtaispeáint beo ag TG4 i mbliana ná mar a taispeánadh sa bhliain 2023.

“Ba mhaith liom buíochas faoi leith a ghlacadh le Rónán Ó Coisdealbha, Ceannaire Spóirt TG4, a bhí lárnach ón gcéad lá riamh sa chomhpháirtíocht idir TG4 agus Peil na mBan. Tá éacht déanta freisin ag an gcomhlacht léiriúcháin Nemeton agus ag foireann inmheánach TG4 as sárchláracha Pheil na mBan a chur ar fáil don lucht féachana ar gach ardán.”

Dúirt Mícheál Naughton, Uachtárán Chumann Pheil na mBan: “Is iontach an imirt atá feicthe againn cheana féin i mbliana i rith Shraith Náisiúnta Lidl agus Chraobhacha Cúigí TG4 agus is gearr uainn anois tús le Craobh Uile-Éireann TG4 na bliana 2024. Am faoi leith seo ag

Cumann Pheil na mBan agus sinn ag ullmhú le ceiliúradh a dhéanamh ar chothrom 50 bliain ó bhunú an Chumainn Déardaoin, an 18 Iúil.

“Is mór atá bainte amach ag an gCumann in imeacht beagnach leithchéad bliain agus chuidigh comhpháirtíochtaí de leithéid an cheangail atá go seasta fada le TG4 leis an spórt a chur ar leibhéal nua seachas mar a bhí bainte amach roimhe sin. Is féidir a bheith ag tnúth arís eile le réimse leathan foirne ag iomaíocht lena chéile maidir leis na coirn a bhronnfar i bPáirc an Chrócaigh Dé Domhnaigh, an 4 Lúnasa ar bhuaiteoirí Chraobhacha Uile-Éireann TG4 2024 i gCraobh na Sóisear, sa Chraobh Idirmheánach agus i gCraobh na Sinsear. Is iad Baile Átha Cliath, a bhuaigh Craobh Laighean na bliana seo le gairid, Curaidh Uile-Éireann i gCraobh na Sinsear ó anuraidh ach tá contaetha eile ag ullmhú freisin a bhfuil deis dáiríre acu ar Chorn Bhreandáin Uí Mháirtín a thabhairt leo. Beidh sárimirt agus cluichí drámatúla le feiceáil freisin sa Chraobh Idirmheánach agus i gCraobh na Sóisear agus neart cur is cúiteamh á dhéanamh ag an lucht faire faoina dtiteann amach idir na foirne agus iad ag féachaint le Corn an West County Hotel agus Corn Cuimhneacháin Mary Quinn a bhreith leo. Chomh maith leis na coirn, bíonn de dhuais ag buaiteoir an dá chraobh seo freisin go mbeidh peil craoibhe á imirt ar ghrád níos airde acu sa bhliain 2025.

“Beidh TG4 linn ó thús go deireadh na craoibhe, mar a bhí gach bliain ó 2001 anall. Is iomaí lá mór feicthe ag an dá eagraíocht in éineacht faoin tráth seo agus cuireann sé leis an mbród agus an ríméad as 50 bliain an chumainn ar an bhfód go mbeidh TG4 linn i mbun comórtha agus ceiliúrtha. Tá an uile imreoir ag díriú anois ar Pháirc an Chrócaigh a bhaint amach lá na Craoibhe agus táimid ag tnúth le fáilte a chur roimh bhreis daoine sna sluaite féachana ag na cluichí éagsúla ar an mbealach. Guím gach rath ar gach uile chontae agus ar gach uile imreoir. Tá sceideal cuimsitheach de chluichí beo ar an teilifís deimhnithe againn arís i mbliana agus, den chéad uair riamh, beidh gach cluiche i gCraobh na Sinsear nach mbíonn le feiceáil beo ar an teilifís ar fáil beo ag an lucht féachana ar chainéal Spórt TG4 ar YouTube. Is sampla den scoth eile é seo do dhúthracht thar barr ar fad TG4 do spórt s’againne. Is mian liom buíochas a chur in iúl do Alan Esslemont, Ard-Stiúrthóir TG4, do Rónán Ó Coisdealbha, an Ceannaire Spóirt agus d’fhoireann uile TG4 as an bhfónamh seasta leanúnach a dhéanann siad ar mhaithe le Peil na mBan.”

To mark the 2024 TG4 All-Ireland Championships launch, and with Croke Park the big target for each of the competing counties, TG4’s Peil na mBan Beo lead anchor Máire Ní Bhraonáin was joined on the streets surrounding the famous Dublin stadium recently by Clodagh McCambridge (Armagh), Ailbhe Davoren (Galway), Aishling O’Connell (Kerry) and Carla Rowe (Dublin), representing the four recently-crowned TG4 provincial senior champions.

Intermediate representatives Niamh Feeney (Roscommon) and Aoibhinn McHugh (Tyrone) were also present, alongside Junior players Róisín Ambrose (Limerick) and Ruth Bermingham (Carlow), to help launch the 2024 TG4 All-Ireland Championships.

The 2024 TG4 All-Ireland Championship season gets underway next Sunday, June 2, with eight group games across the Intermediate and Junior grades.

The Senior Championship will commence on Saturday June 8 when Armagh host Meath at the BOX-IT Athletic Grounds, followed by three more Senior championship ties on Sunday June 9.

The groupings for the All-Ireland Senior and Intermediate Championships were populated as the provincial campaigns progressed.

At Senior level, defending champions Dublin, aiming for back-to-back titles, are in Group 4 alongside Mayo and Kildare.

Group 1 features Ulster champions Armagh, Meath and Tipperary, with Munster champions Kerry, who were TG4 All-Ireland Senior finalists in 2022 and 2023, in Group 2 alongside Donegal and Waterford.

Group 3 contains Galway, the Connacht champions, who will play Cork and Laois.

In the Intermediate Championship, last year’s finalists Clare will be hoping to go one better this time and they’re in Group 2 with Monaghan and Offaly.

Group 1 contains Ulster champions Down, Westmeath and Cavan, with Wexford, the Leinster champions, in Group 3 with Roscommon and Antrim.

Group 4, meanwhile, contains Connacht champions Leitrim, Wicklow and Tyrone.

The Junior Championship, meanwhile, will be contested by nine counties, with London, Sligo, Fermanagh, Derry and Carlow in Group A, and Kilkenny, Louth, Limerick and Longford in Group B.

In the Senior and Intermediate Championships, two teams will emerge from each group to contest the quarter-finals, with the top two teams in each of the Junior groups progressing to the semi-finals.

Last week, the LGFA and TG4 also confirmed live linear TV coverage of 15 fixtures, while all Senior Championship ties not shown live on TV will be live-streamed via the Spórt TG4 YouTube channel, in an historic development.

The LGFA and TG4 also confirmed that the 2024 TG4 All-Ireland Senior Championship semi-finals will be played as a double-header at Glenisk O’Connor Park in Tullamore, Co. Offaly, on Saturday July 20 (5.15pm and 7.30pm).

The 2024 TG4 All-Ireland Finals will be staged as a triple-header once again at Croke Park on Sunday August 4, with the Junior Final at 11.45am, followed by the Intermediate decider at 1.45pm and the Senior Final at 4.15pm.

Peil na mBan Beo will be available to audiences globally on the TG4 Player at https://www.tg4.ie/en/player/watch-live/home/ and on the TG4 Mobile and Smart TV App.

Former Galway star Máire Ní Bhraonáin will lead TG4’s Peil na mBan Beo coverage once again for the forthcoming Championship season. The commentary team will be headed up by Brian Tyers.

They will be joined by expert panellists including former Cork TG4 All-Ireland Championship winners Rena Buckley and Rhóna Ní Bhuachalla, ex-Waterford ace Michelle Ryan, Dublin All-Ireland winner Sorcha Furlong, Donegal’s Emer Gallagher and Róisín Rodgers, and more.

TG4 have been title sponsors of the All-Ireland Ladies Football Championships since 2001 and the partnership has evolved into one of the most recognised and innovative in world sport.

In 2022, TG4 announced a five-year extension of their sponsorship of the All-Ireland Ladies Football inter-county championships, with this deal set to last until the conclusion of the 2027 season.

Speaking on behalf of TG4, Director General Alan Esslemont said: “Comhghairdeas ó chroí uaimse agus ó Bhord agus ó fhoireann TG4 le gach duine ag Cumann Peil Gael na mBan agus an 50ú lá breithe den chumann á cheiliúradh acu ar an 18 Iúil i mbliana.

“It has been my privilege this year to be involved in some of the provincial celebrations of the LGFA’s 50th anniversary and to hear at first hand from some of those involved about how the advancement of the LGFA was achieved, person by person, parish by parish and county by county. The present success of Ladies Gaelic Football is a wonderful reflection on the tireless efforts and vision of the volunteers in the earliest years and over the decades. Their stories of how society shunned and snubbed Ladies Football deserve to be told and TG4 will have a role in sharing these stories. However, the LGFA has grown to be a best-in-class organisation with a vision to achieve true equality. I salute, and all of TG4 celebrates, those who have contributed to building excellence in the playing of Ladies Gaelic Football and in the administration of the sport.

“Personally it has been a great honour for me to have worked over the last eight years of the fifty years with Uachtarán Marie Hickey, Uachtarán Micheál Naughton and with LGFA Chief Executive Helen O’ Rourke and her fantastic team. The professionalism of the LGFA organisation is inextricably linked to the quality of Helen’s leadership. The partnership between the LGFA and TG4 since 2001 has seen us both grow and flourish. It is a partnership of mutual respect, close alliance and shared ambition.

“This year every match in the TG4 All Ireland Senior Championship will be shown live by TG4, on our linear or online platforms. This is the first time TG4 has committed to showing every single game in the championship. In total, TG4 will show at least 10 more live games in 2024 than we did in 2023.

“Ba mhaith liom buíochas faoi leith a ghlacadh le Ceannaire Spóirt TG4, Rónán Ó Coisdealbha, a bhí lárnach ón gcéad lá riamh sa chomhpháirtíocht idir TG4 agus Peil na mBan. Tá éacht déanta freisin ag an gcomhlacht léirithe, Nemeton, agus ag foireann inmheánach TG4 as cláracha Pheil na mBan den scoth a chur ar fáil don lucht féachana ar gach ardán.”

Mícheál Naughton, President of the Ladies Gaelic Football Association, commented: “We’ve already seen some brilliant action throughout the Lidl National Leagues and into the TG4 provincial championships – and now it’s almost time for the 2024 TG4 All-Ireland series to commence. This is a very special time for the Ladies Gaelic Football Association, as we get ready to celebrate our 50th anniversary on Thursday, July 18.

“In almost half a century, we have achieved so much and partnerships like our long-standing relationship with TG4 have helped to elevate our sport to new and unprecedented levels. We can look ahead once again to wide open races for the silverware on offer at Croke Park on Sunday August 4, when we will crown our 2024 TG4 All-Ireland Junior, Intermediate and Senior champions. Dublin, having won the Leinster title recently, begin as All-Ireland Senior champions but there are a number of counties lining up with serious ambitions of claiming the Brendan Martin Cup. The Intermediate and Junior competitions promise to be filled with brilliant football and drama also and the races for the West County Hotel and Mary Quinn Memorial Cups promise to be intriguing. Winning these competitions also brings the guarantee of championship football at a higher grade in 2025.

“With us every step of the way once again, as they have been since 2001, will be TG4. TG4 have been with us for so many milestones and they’ll share our joy and pride in reaching 50 years in existence. As the road to Croker begins, we’re looking forward to seeing more and more people attend our various championship fixtures, and I wish each and every county and player the very best of luck along the way. We have confirmed another bumper schedule of live TV fixtures and, for the very first time, all Senior Championship fixtures not shown on live TV will be available live to viewers via the Spórt TG4 YouTube channel. This is yet another outstanding example of TG4’s outstanding commitment to our sport. Many thanks to TG4 Director General Alan Esslemont, Head of Sport, Rónán Ó Coisdealbha and the entire TG4 team for their continued and unwavering support of Ladies Gaelic Football.”

The Ladies Gaelic Football Association and Championship sponsors TG4 are also pleased to announce that, in total, 15 live TV fixtures have been agreed upon.

Additionally, and in an historic development, all Senior Championship games not shown live on linear TV will be live-streamed via the Spórt TG4 YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/@SportTG4

There will be two live TV TG4 games from each round of the Senior Championship during the group phase, along with all four Senior Championship quarter-finals, both Senior Championship semi-finals, and the Junior, Intermediate and Senior Finals.

The live TV action commences on Sunday June 9 with a double-header of fixtures featuring Donegal, Kerry, Dublin and Mayo.

The first live TV game on the day is the meeting of Donegal and visitors Kerry (TG4 All-Ireland Senior finalists in 2022 and 2023), from Ballybofey (1.05pm) followed by the clash between Dublin, the TG4 Leinster and All-Ireland Senior Champions, and Mayo at Parnell Park (2.50pm).

On Saturday, June 15, the clash between Cork and Galway (1pm) will be shown live on TV, along with either Kerry v Waterford (3pm) or Tipperary v Armagh (5.30pm), depending on scheduling.

In Round 3, on Sunday June 23, the live TV picks are Waterford v Donegal (1.30pm) and Meath v Tipperary (3.30pm).

The reward for the group winners in the Senior and Intermediate championships is a home quarter-final, with the last-eight ties to be confirmed by a draw. The Senior Championship quarter-final draw will be shown live on TG4 following the Meath v Tipperary game on June 23.

The Intermediate Championship quarter-finals are scheduled for Sunday June 30, with the Senior quarter-finals fixed for the weekend of Saturday/Sunday July 6/7.

The Intermediate Championship semi-finals will take place on Sunday July 14, with the Senior Championship semi-finals set to be played as a double-header at Glenisk O’Connor Park in Tullamore, Co. Offaly, on Saturday July 20 (5.15pm and 7.30pm).

Following the conclusion of the group phase, four teams (two from each group) will advance to contest the Junior Championship semi-finals, which are fixed for Sunday July 14.

Munster LGFA Senior Championship Final

by Anthony Newman

Kerry 2-15 -v- Cork 0-13

Sheer delight for Kerry as they were crowned TG4 Munster Senior A ladies football champions for the first time since 2017 at Mallow.

The Kingdom started well, before falling behind to Cork, but a goal from Emma Dineen just before half-time got them back in contention.

When she raised her second green flag with nine minutes to go it was the killer blow, as they led by six points at that stage and there was no way back for Cork.

Add in a simply outstanding display from Danielle O’Leary, who scored 10 points for Kerry and was the deserving winner of the Player of the Game award, closely followed by Kayleigh Cronin.

O’Leary opened the scoring for Kerry in the fourth minute as she fisted over the bar from a long ball in. She doubled their lead after 10 minutes, with a long stoppage for an injury in between to players from both sides. The same player made it 0-3 to no score as Cork were finding it difficult to get going, thanks to some superb defending by Kerry.

Katie Quirke got Cork off the mark after 14 minutes and from the restart Rachel Leahy got their second point to make it 0-3 to 0-2. With 16 minutes gone Cork were back on level terms when Melissa Duggan did what she does best. She burst forward to score as Cork were now much more in contention.

Quirke got her second from a free to put Cork in front for the first time after 19 minutes play.

Another bursting run from a Cork player, this time Laura O’Mahony, put Cork two to the good as they were now playing the better football.

Quirke pointed from another free, with Aoife Healy and O’Mahony also scoring to make it 0-8 to 0-3 after 28 minutes. Quirke then got Cork’s ninth point in a row as the Rebels were enjoying the better of the play.

O’Leary and Quirke exchanged points from frees as Cork led by six as half time approached. Just before the half time whistle Kerry got the boost they needed when a ball in from Katie Brosnan was fisted to the back of the net by Emma Dineen, to see Cork lead by 0-10 to 1-4 at the break. O’Leary, Kerry’s only point scorer in the first half, added another 30 seconds into the second, with Lydia McDonagh replying for Cork.

O’Leary, who was keeping her side in contention on her own hit another to put a point between the sides. And with 40 minutes gone O’Leary scored again to level it.

Another from O’Leary put Kerry back in front after 41 minutes the first time they lead since the 16th.

Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh, who came on after 39 minutes, scored a point, the first Kerry player aside from O’Leary to raise a white flag for them.

O’Leary got her ninth to increase Kerry’s lead, with Niamh Carmody also pointing, to make it 1-11 to 0-11 in their favour after 49 minutes.

Kerry had one hand on the trophy after 51 minutes when Dineen got her, and Kerry’s, second goal to make it 2-11 to 0-11. Quirke hit back for Cork but time wasn’t on their side as  Ní Mhuircheartaigh and Carmody increased Kerry’s lead. Ní Mhuircheartaigh got the last score of the game as the Kingdom won the title for the first time since 2017.
