Congratulations to the Kerry U16 team & management who had a good win over Cork in the Munster U16 A Final, final score Kerry 3-12 Cork 1-06. Played on Saturday best day over the weekend, in perfect conditions in Castletownroche, Kerry got off to a dream start with a point in the opening minute from Erica McGlynn. Kerry were dominant in midfield with Leah Henry & in particular Emma Dineen playing very well. Kerry added further points from play from Emma Dineen & Hannah O’Donoghue while Fiadhna Tangney added a point from a free to give Kerry a 4 point lead by the 15th minute. Corks opening score & in fact all three scores were pointed frees. With the Kerry backs defending smartly from the front & depriving their forwards opportunities to score. Kerry added further scores through Fiadhna Tangney a point, Liz Mohan & Ciara Murphy. Kerry in the last minute of the half were through on a goal when Erica McGlynn followed in a high ball but was unable to contain the pass & Cork were able to breathe a sigh of relief. Kerry at half time up 0-08 to Cork 0-03. In the second half Cork emerged first ready for the second half to commence but the team management of Graham Shine, Joanne & Julie Brosnan with Marie O’Connor took their time to go through second half plans & this was evident the way the team attacked Cork from the off again. Hannah O’Donoghue who was moving very well, played a great through ball to Aoife O’Callaghan who picked up a great spot near the Cork goal but was unlucky not to Kerry’s first goal as the Cork defender managed to tap away the ball. But Kerry were rewarded with their direct attacking play with a goal from Erika McGlynn after another good through ball from Hannah O’Donoghue which was finished to the Cork net. This was followed up with a penalty from Aoife O’Callaghan after a push on the back on a Kerry forward. Kerry were completely over running Cork, with the Kerry backs keeping focus & not giving an inch to their player. Cork pulled a point back from a free but the result was becoming clear, with Hannah O’Donoghue collecting a pass from Fiadhna Tangney & with one thing on her mind, ran straight through the Cork defence & hit a rasper of a shot to the back of Cork net. With 10/12 minutes remaining to play Cork managed to get their first score from play, as a Kerry pass out of defence was easily intercepted by Cork who struck for goal through Aisling Healy. They followed this up minutes later with a well struck point from a difficult angle by Ciara McCarthy. But it was Kerry who finished the stronger with points from Hannah O’Donoghue & Emma Dineen. Captain Faye O’Donoghue Fossa accepted the cup to the great cheer of the large Kerry support present. Emma Dineen Glenflesk was Awarded Player of the Match for her great display in midfield. Next up is All Ireland semi final on 15th July against Leinster winners, either Dublin or Meath as that final takes place the weekend.
