Aisling McGing Championship Round 1
Kerry 0-12 Meath 2-7
Kerry lost their first round tie in the Aisling McGing in Navan in dramatic circumstances. A late, late injury time winner gave the Royal County a one point win on Sunday last. Kerry's next tie in the competition is at home to Galway in Causeway on the weekend of August 14/15. Pictured below is the Kerry side and also read more for a full match report.
Another Meath Team and another Ref controversy as a gutsy Kerry junior ladies team went down to the home side in Senchalstown after conceding a point in the 8th Minute of injury time on Sunday.
The Kerry side made the long journey more in hope than expectation when a number of Senior players cried off due to injury puts this result into real context
Kerry Got off to a flier when Mary O’Keefe scored her first of seven points from a 4th min free of which she added to a few mins later to give Kerry a point advantage.
Meath struck for a Goal in a the 11min but Kerry again rallied with Mary O’Keefe pointing again on the 14th min followed by an Aoife Dillane effort on the 16min.
Amamnda o’Donnell and Julie Brosnan were holding their own at midfield but the loss of Christine Foley due to injury began to put more pressure on the midfield as Meath got to grips and scored twice in as many minutes. It looked ominous for the Kerry side but to their Credit rallied strongly in the last 5 mins of a lively first half adding points from Muireann O’Shea, Mary Herlihy and Mary O’Keefe after sub Orla Sullivan played a great ball over the top of two Meath defenders with O’Keefes shot inches over the cross bar.
Meath ran in the changes at half time and introduced 3 Senior players but Kerry continued where they left off from with a point from Muireann Shea before 3 costly wides did not punish Meath for the possession Kerry were enjoying.
Then on the 8th min Kerry conceded a bizarre penalty after Hannah Fortune brought of a great save. Karina O’Connor and Mary Burke both dived to regain possession and when the whistle went all expected a hop ball but to Kerry’s disbelief the Monaghan Official awarded a penalty which was dispatched to level the match at 2-2 to 8 points.
Meath Buoyed by this got a run on Kerry and despite some great defending by Maura O’Connor and Karina O’Connor Kerry were to concede 3 further points to put Meath in the driving seat with 10 mins remaining 2-5 to 8 points. However this Kerry junior team were not to be outdone and Amanda o’Donnell came to the fore again at midfield and with Marie Enright getting on to vital breaks Kerry move on a gear and pulled 2 points back when O’Keefe scored 2 frees which were won by the direct running of Muireann Shea and Cait Lynch. A point between the teams with 3 mins to go and the large Home Meath support wiled on the home side and were awarded when they converted a free to move the margin to 2. Aine Dillions block proved vital as full time approach and a lung bursting run from Cait Lynch was award with an O’Keefe free. From the Meath Kick out Mary Herhily fielded and split the posts from 40 yards to draw level and to the stunned silence of Meath supporters, however 8 added Minutes of injury time in a second half that few time delays proved too much for the Kerry girls as they conceded a point on the 8th min much to the total disappointment of a Kerry side who gave all that they had.
However this was a very positive first outing in the All Ireland Junior League and another sign of the encouraging improvement in the fortunes of the Kerry Ladies Football. Kerry will now host Galway in their next outing on August 14/15 to be hosted by the Causeway Ladies club.
